Exploring Line

My drawing of each hand

Reflection:

1. What was it like using your hand as subject matter for a drawing?
I liked being able to use my hands as subject matter for my own drawing, because it really got me to look at my hands and the details in them while drawing to help make my drawings depict my hands realistically.

2. What media did you select - pencil or charcoal? Why?
For my drawings of my hands, I selected to use pencil, mostly for the reason that it was so easily available to me for this assignment. I am also accustomed to using pencils for many of my drawings, so I felt comfortable using pencil as my media. I also tend to be a bit of a perfectionist, so having pencil being erasable, I like that I can erase my mistakes if necessary.

3. How did it feel to create a drawing with your non-dominant hand?
Creating a drawing with my non-dominant hand felt very foreign and strange to me. My right hand is very dominant when it comes to anything involving writing or drawing, which made drawing with my left hand an interesting, yet fun challenge for me. Even when I was holding the pencil, it felt strange, as if I was holding the pencil incorrectly. Once I got drawing, I felt a little bit better about creating something with my left hand, but it turned out nothing like the drawing I completed with my dominant hand.

4. Compare and contrast your final drawings. Do you think they are successful studies?
My final drawings of each hand are very different fro one another. The drawing of my left hand that I completed with my dominant hand has smoother lines and values to it, while the drawing of my right hand done with my left hand has smaller, more choppy looking lines to it. I think that these drawings are successful studies, because while they are both very different, both show the use of line and the variations of it as well.

5. Would you consider using your non-dominant hand to create artwork in the future?
I would consider using my non-dominant hand to create artwork in the future, but I also think that it would depend on what I am creating. If I were doing experimental sketches to try out new techniques, I would consider using my left hand. However, in a final piece I would most likely use my right hand, as I would want my work to turn out as perfect as possible.
